ho risolto!

alla fine ho scoperto che occorreva abilitare l'identificazione SSL:

pop3 - pop3s.aruba.it

smtp - smtps.aruba.it

viva me.

abbasso aruba.

la risposta ti è stata data da loasca

4 blocca gli smtp di altri operatori, ma con l'ssl viene usata la porta 465 e non la classica 25 dell'smtp

per questo gmail funzica, di default usa la 465 in uscita ;-)
